GRIEF SUPPORT

I THOUGHT I KNEW GRIEF. After all, I'd experienced many losses - and had even worked in hospice & bereavement settings for almost a decade. Yet, nothing could prepare me for the tragic death of my beloved sister, only 2 months after the sudden death of our father. Those losses left me reeling, stumbling through a shattered world that seemed to have no idea how to support someone in grief.

I quickly realized that in order to counter the many unhelpful responses of others, I would need to educate myself. So, in addition to personal grief support, I obtained multiple grief education certifications. I also saw how my journal writing & mindfulness training (which I instinctively adapted for grief) was playing a pivotal role in my journey. These empowering tools have helped me cultivate insight, agency and self-compassion as I continue to cope with the complexities of loss.

I have since created an online Substack community in order to share these precious prompts and reflections which, while informed by my background and training, are sourced by grief itself.

Wild Words for Grief is a labour of love, a vocation, an evolving affirmation of who I am becoming. As a writer, facilitator, grief educator and mindfulness teacher with training in trauma-sensitive practices, I take this work seriously. And I am also here as a fellow story-tender, trudging through the strange and delicate landscape of loss. Join me as we gather at this quiet portal nestled at the intersection of life, death and possibility.

Let’s explore our Wild Words for Grief together.

JOURNAL WRITING

JOURNAL WRITING
promotes freedom, insight and self-expression. A grief-sensitive journal writing practice provides a safe container to explore the many nuances and complexities of loss. Grief-sensitive writing prompts are simple, flexible and responsive to the shifting needs of grief.

Journal writing can have profound benefits, regardless of whether you choose to write about your loss. This affirming practice creates a space of self-compassion, reminding you that it's okay to show up just as you are.

Use grief-sensitive journal writing to:

  • Witness and express your unique grief story.
  • Experience the restorative nature of creativity.
  • Honour your intuition and inner wisdom.
  • Identify challenges, needs and sources of support.

MINDFULNESS

MINDFULNESS is a wisdom practice that helps us explore what's arising in the present moment with awareness and compassion. Secular mindfulness is practiced widely and offers many proven benefits.

Grief-sensitive mindfulness acknowledges the challenges grievers face in working with thoughts, feelings and physical sensations - all of which can be compounded by the reactions of a grief-averse culture. Mindfulness helps us respond with wisdom and clarity through adaptive practices for loss.

Grief-sensitive mindfulness can help you:

  • Respond to your grief with curiosity and compassion.
  • Attune to what is naturally stable and nourishing.
  • Strengthen insight, discernment and wise knowing.
  • Honour the delicate dance of grief, love and life.
